🔥 What’s up, Bangkok?  This week’s Applied Artificial Intelligence newsletter comes from Bangkok, capital of Thailand, curated by our ambassadors Chanwit Boonchuay, an AI entrepreneur and academic.

Meet our curator
Chanwit Boonchuay is CEO and co-founder of SYNAPES, a pioneer AI company in Thailand. Chanwit and his team have developed a cognitive engine named “SOMSRi” to support local businesses in several sectors including health, retail, legal, and finance. He is educating people how to apply AI in their businesses together with Dr.Warodom Hhamphanchai, and they currently lead the Bangkok AI Community.
Applied AI community in Bangkok
The Bangkok AI community launched in July 2016 and today is the largest applied artificial intelligence community in Thailand. In the early days our regular gatherings were supported by HUBBA, Thailand’s first co-working space to bring diverse groups of people to learn about AI.
In June 2017, we organized the What’s up AI, inviting AI startups and enterprises to update the community on their AI development and to share their lessons learned. This is when we officially joined City.AI to exchange knowledge and experiences in applying AI globally. Our recent event on Nov. 29, 2017 Global Views on AI presenting insights from the World Summit AI 2017 attracted more than 100 people to join and discuss with the local AI experts.
Lessons from Bangkok AI
In Bangkok, there are very few companies implementing AI to enhance businesses and gain competitiveness. Only big corporates  strongly believe that AI could provide new opportunities and business models, but even they are in exploration phase. This implies that the AI industry in our country is in a nascent stage.
For large enterprises, data preparation and integration are key issues in applying AI since no one can plan nicely for a significant change into the big data and AI era. In addition, data scientists who can solve data problems are insufficient. Thus, small data companies and startups could find opportunities to collaborate with big enterprises or to provide them with proper solutions for data analytics.
Thai natural language processing (NLP) is a hot issue to extract intents of texting sentences. Using machine learning for Thai word separations could significantly improve accuracy of the process. However, reaching the goal of intent understanding may require advanced computation techniques such as relation extraction, paraphrase and natural language inferences, semantic parsing, and sentiment analysis.
