Dear readers,
Welcome to 2019’s first edition of CentAm Curator. I wish you a wonderful year ahead!
Here are a few key events scheduled in Central America this year:
  • The OAS should soon vote on whether to suspend Nicaragua from the forum and help apply sanctions
  • Pope will be in Panama for World Youth Day (January 23 - 27)
  • El Salvador will elect its new president on February 2 for the first elections’ round, Panama will do so on May 5 and Guatemala, on June 16
  • Guatemala will have new judges in its Supreme Court of Justice
  • Belizeans will choose in a referendum on whether the International Court of Justice should rule on the Guatemala/Belize land dispute, on April 10
  • Costa Rica will hold the Pre-COP 25 meeting in October

Thank you for reading.

Good reads
  • Ismael Lopez Ocampo offers a useful reported summary of what is happening in Nicaragua now, for the Washington Post.
  • Report on how the two Honduran boys were killed by organized crime in Tijuana, by Emily Green, for Vice.
  • In an interview, the director of Salvadoran penal centers urges the state to invest in prisons and believes in rehabilitation of gang members. In Spanish, by Roberto Valencia in El Faro.
  • For those who like stories on evangelical megachurches, Nómada republished a profile by Paola Hurtado of famous evangelical pastor Carlos “Cash”. In Spanish.
  • “A Salvadoran women’s theater troupe tackles violence…and healing” on Wall Street Journal, by Juan Forero. Haven’t been able to go past pay wall - which is unfortunate as it looks good.
Luis Von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo and Guatemalan, paid $600 to Google Consumer Surveys to launch a survey on whether people approve of Guatemala’s president and CICIG. He claims the results are similar to those of international surveys. More information can be found on Nómada and Von Ahn’s twitter account.
