๐ŸงŸ Zombie Awareness Month #Issue5
By Arts4refugees • Issue #5 • View online
Ciao beautiful people,
We are coming to the end of Zombie appreciation month 2021. Zombies are the new vampires ๐Ÿง› & werewolves ๐Ÿบ. They have officially taken over the underworld and are making their way into our daily lives. Even the CDC (Center for Disease Control) has a page dedicated to Zombies - seriously have a look here ๐Ÿ‘ˆ .
How come? Traditionally, vampires and werewolves dominated the underworld - it was their space. This starts to change in the 1960โ€™s. Movies like the Night of the Living Dead brought the Zombie into the mainstream. More recently Army of the Dead verify how popular the Zombie genre has become. These movies tap into the evolution of the concept of the living dead in industrial societies. They deal with daily issues we face using the metaphor of the Zombie. For example, fast fashion, mass consumption, etc - we are big on changing this here as well. ๐Ÿ˜Š These issues were touched on in the Zombie genre.
3 interesting facts -
  1. Oxford University ๐ŸŽ“ entrance depends on whether you prefer to be a Zombie or a Vampire. Fact checked here. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  2. Zombies are part of Minecraft ๐ŸŽฎ - they have muscled their way into the gaming industry as well. Sorry vampires!๐Ÿ˜ฆ
  3. Zombie protest song ๐ŸŽถ by The Cranberries reached number 1 globally. From Australia, Iceland, Germany, Belgium to Denmark and more. In the US it topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. Not to mention over a billion views on YouTube. ๐ŸŽž๏ธ Watch it here.
Just a reminder we work with undiscovered artists. We support them build their brands. Donโ€™t forget to check them out ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ™ป๏ธImpact Corner
In Northern Uganda - we have supported members of the post conflict region of Lira. To date we have supported 3 x eco friendly micro businesses set up in below $5 a day communities. This means the founders - all women - have received training, stock / goods and business mentoring to setup these businesses. For example, 1 micro business rents solar lamps to the local community. This reduces the usage of kerosene oil domestically. We donโ€™t need to mention the health benefits alone from this. โœ”๏ธ
Another 2 x businesses offer recyclable sanitary wear locally for other women - obviously! On average, each micro business has 3-5 co founders. Even if the Covid crisis gets the better of these micro businesses - the founders will still have the life skills & training to run a business of their own. ๐Ÿ’ฏ
Each artists gives 50% of their earnings with us to help this community pick themselves up and become economically engaged again. Learn more about them below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Volunteers' Corner ๐Ÿ’ฏ โœ”๏ธ
Letโ€™s show you what our team of dedicated professionals have been up to over the last month - donโ€™t forget to give them a ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ
Beccy has been helping us organise our coming new interns from Oxford University. Once they have confirmed their places with us they will be focusing on sharing stories from the communities we support.
Alarmingly, these post conflict communities have been forgotten in time. Their experience is not well understood by decision makers and you the public.
So, we have teamed up with Jackie - a Forbes contributor based near Boston. We are working to make these experiences accessible to everyone. So, watch this space.
Megan found a proper job - she can earn a decent living now. ๐Ÿ™‚ Our volunteering program is designed to be a side project. So, our volunteers can access decent paid work afterwards. Look us up if you ever feel the need.
Janeth, Tess & Anam have completed their time with us as well.
Watch out for the Zombies. There is one behind you - honest ๐Ÿ˜‰
Till next month. ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ
