“Tidjane Thiam made Credit Suisse profitable again. But the Swiss rejected him as an outsider, and a sudden scandal took him down.” This read from The New York Times, is a stark reminder of the challenges and oppressions experienced by female and minority senior leaders in 2020. This year more than ever in the UK, we have shone a light of the shared inequalities of racism across the world and not just America. The more I have progressed in my career the more I have personally had a mixed feeling of genuine excitement, gratitude and fear. It can be lonely and scary being the only black leader at a meeting, event or part of a management team. I’ve often questions the cost of ambition and how ambition could impact my mental health, marriage and relationships more broadly. I’m nit yet at a point where I can confess that my race and career has impacted the above heavily but as I read this NYT piece and read about Mr Thiam’s divorce to his wife for several years, I question, the cost of ambition.
