2 Lessons From Epictetus
1. Remember What’s In Your Control
“Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.”
It’s humbling but also vital for us each to distinguish between things that are under our control and things that are not. Remember to let go and accept things for how they are.
2. Set the Standard
“Never call yourself a philosopher, nor talk a great deal among the unlearned about theorems, but act conformably to them. Thus, at an entertainment, don’t talk how persons ought to eat, but eat as you ought.”
When we think about role models, we don’t seek to imitate every aspect of their lives but we do seek to rise to the standards they set. Whether consciously or not, when we interact with people, hire a team or start a company, we set the standard and leave a lasting impression.
