AR/VR Weekly
Facebook laid out its vision for augmented and virtual reality last week at Oculus Connect 6, and it’s a future that’s going to be social, intertwined with our working lives … and if the massive company has its way, on its platforms.
While Mark Zuckerberg and crew talked about games off and on, we got lengthy presentations on Horizon, Facebook’s new PlayStation Home-meets-Roblox virtual world. We saw VB for business, and Johnson & Johnson came onstage and talked about how it’s using VR to teach medical procedures. In a sweet vignette, we saw VP for AR/VR Andrew Bosworth watching the Golden State Warriors with his father.
It’s clear that Facebook wants to be at the center of how we interact in virtual worlds, just like it wanted to be in the center of how we interact online. Well, how’s that working out for us? Facebook and Google have dominated the ad markets, making it more difficult for media to survive (the very outlets Facebook and Google want to deliver content). Facebook continues to have trouble keeping hate groups, trolls, and outright liars from peddling their garbage and harming our democracy and society.
And after all that, Facebook expects us to trust it with the creation of a space in which we hang, learn, and work. I don’t.
