AR/VR Weekly
Minecraft is one of the biggest phenomena on Earth, so it makes sense that its first augmented reality game is called Minecraft Earth. And based on the demo we (and everyone else watching) saw, Mojang potentially has the first good use of AR in a video game.
Onstage, Mojang’s Lydia Winters and Saxs Persson revealed how it works (check out the featured video below). They built a familiar Minecraft castle. Winters’ phone first turned into a pickaxe as she worked on stone, then she placed the blocks.
Flicking a finger to catch a Pokémon can’t compare to this.
AR remains in its formative stages, and it’s worth tempering your excitement. Remember when Microsoft showed off Minecraft for the HoloLens in 2015? Yeah, that hasn’t happened yet. But with most smartphones having AR capabilities these days, I expect to see Minecraft Earth happen long before we see it work on HoloLens.
My question: Will it rival Pokémon Go for players? Hundreds of thousands of people still trot out looking for Pokémon and defending gyms every day. I bet they’ll build houses and forts (or, you know, re-create entire European nation) and defend themselves from Creepers and Endermen.
By the hundreds of thousands.
