Hello Responsible AI supporters!
We hope you all are having a great start to 2021!
Like for many of you, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed our launch to September 2020, but we are happy to report that we have had an eventful first few months at R/AI! We welcomed exceptional new hires, started exciting engagements and programs, and created lots of responsible AI content to share with our growing community!
R/AI is Growing
We are thrilled to announce that our team has grown! Joining the Center are Dr. Mona Sloane, Dr. Eric Corbett, and Meghan McDermott as affiliates; Dr. Raoni Lourenco as post-doctoral research fellow; Falaah Arif Khan as artist-in-residence, Alene Rhea Kelsey Markey, Lauren D’Arinzo, Prasanti Gurumurthi as graduate research fellows, and Maria Grillo as project associate. See the whole team and their contact info on our website.
R/AI’s Public Engagement on Hiring Algorithms
In collaboration with the Queens Public Library’s Job and Business Academy, the we conducted 3 virtual workshops on “Uncovering Hidden Decisions: AI in Hiring.” The public education workshops have seen around 100 participants, and explored the invisible but increasing role that AI and automated decision systems (ADS) play in hiring, from screening and ranking resumes to the use of facial recognition software for interviews.
On November 19th we hosted a public forum on "Responsible AI and Why it Matters,” organized with Schneps Media and NYU Tandon, and with participation of Stefaan Verhulst, co-founder of The GovLab. We had 140 participants! Watch the workshop here:
Our team participated in the New York City’s Council’s Hearing on NYC’s proposed law to regulate the use of algorithmic hiring tool, Bill 1894, on November 13. Testimonies were educational and explained how ADS work in the context of employment. See our testimony on the R/AI YouTube channel. In December 2020, we released a Public Engagement Showreel, showcasing our activities.
Accolades for the Data, Responsibly Comic Series
“Mirror, Mirror,” the first volume of the Data, Responsibly comic series created by Falaah Arif Khan, our Artist in Residence, and Julia Stoyanovich, was released in English, Spanish and French, and can be downloaded here. The comic received the September 2020 “Innovation of the Month” award from the MetroLab Network, and was featured in GovTech and in the Toronto Star.
Other things we’ve been up to:
  • We are thrilled to partner with The GovLab on their amazing free course AI Ethics: Global Perspectives and on AI Localism, a project that focuses on the responsible design and use of AI at the local level.
  • “Is AI Effective If It Isn’t Equitable and Responsible?” Read about our vision in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
  • Julia Stoyanovich gave a keynote at the 46th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2020), a premier data management venue held digitally in Tokyo. Julia’s presentation is available at this link, the accompanying paper can be found here.
